Fighting Censorship Through Blockchain. Here’s How!

Us Pakis know how HUGE the censorship problem here in Pakistan is. Much of our media is controlled and free thought isn’t exercised that much. The most affected group of this is are the artists. Art doesn’t work with a moral compass. It is supposed to push people out of their comfort zones and make them ponder.

The advent of the internet did see less control, however, people still found a way to control it. And though these constructs are crumbling, the state still gets to push forward what’s legal or illegal, what information can reach the audience and what things they can block out.

Blockchain breaks down these social constructs

Established and age-old norms are being broken down by the blockchain and cryptocurrency. We all know blockchain is Karl Marx’s wet dream and his ideology of believing in the ability of the working class to forge its own destiny without the need for a revolutionary party or state to mediate or aid its liberation is something that really aligns with the concept of decentralization.

The freedom to express, associate and interact as we please what once used to be privileges, are universal rights now.

Results are still the same

But despite all of this, the results are pretty much the same. The state is never truly free and something or the other ends up being under surveillance. No matter how democratic your country might be, subtle state intervention exists.

Whereas on the other hand blockchain takes a very different form of censorship, however, a bit similar one. In the case of the blockchain, the power lies with the exchanges; users can be blocked from using crypto exchanges. They control who participates in crypto transactions.

Other forms of control are governance changes that include software updates, the changing of rules or forking of cryptocurrencies are all ways to control transactions. So to be resistant censorship, cryptocurrencies must operate through an immutable ledger.

Fight Against Censorship Continues

Many players in the crypto community are fighting against censorship. The community believes in political decentralization and it is an integral part of the crypto community. It believes that information should be accessible by all and users should be the one in control of this information. This is why blockchain is revolutionary.

Its key strength is to be able to fight against censorship and operate in a trustless environment. Blockchain makes censorship resistance a possibility though unalterable transactions. However, it should ensure that the information should remain public. If true censorship is to be achieved, no one should be able to exclude or deny others access to information.

The model appeals to people across the globe and is undoubtedly the future of how we will consume information.
