After its foray into the crypto world in 2018 with the launch of Exodus 1, designed for cryptos, Taiwan based technology company HTC has announced to launch its successor. Now, HTC is launching HTC Exodus 1s, capable of running a full bitcoin node! The company announced at the Magical Crypto Conference in New York.
HTC launched a blockchain powered smartphone, HTC Exodus last year. The Exodus was the first technology product created for the crypto world. It was also the first time a technology giant focused on blockchain and crypto and launched a mainstream hardware product designed around it specifically. The HTC Exodus was launched at a time when the cryptocurrency market was collapsing, but despite the market’s downfall HTC’s exodus smartphone, according to the company, did very well, considering the phone was priced at a 1,000$. Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin uses the phone for his daily use and has shown his approval for the phone as well.
The specifications of Exodus 1s were not disclosed at the event. However, the company made it clear for the attendees that the phone won’t have any compromises and it will be a revolutionary pairing of both the smartphone technology as well as blockchain. The company is also trying to make it accessible for people as thet revealed that the phone would be launched at a lower price point than the previous phone. The press release after the event elaborates:
It will allow users in emerging economies, or those wanting to dip their toes into the crypto world for the first time, easier access to the technology with a more accessible price point. This will democratize access to crypto and blockchain technology and help its global proliferation and adoption.
Exodus 1s will be the first consumer-facing smartphone that will have full node capabilities. The phone will be able to download the whole bitcoin blockchain onto itself, thus getting people away from third-party nodes that are a great privacy risk. Full nodes are a really important component of the bitcoin network, and the mainstream entry into this arena will help create a decentralized technology revolution. Phil Chen, the decentralized chief officer, said that the company was building the technology for the free world. While talking about the full node capability of the phone, he said:
Running a node is maybe the most important part of the blockchain as it helps secure the network; every one of them acts as an authoritative verifier of every single transaction of the block. We first empowered the user by owning their keys, and now we’re focused on empowering the user to run their node to help secure and grow the network.
There are many skeptics about HTC’s project. However, the die-hard crypto enthusiasts are excited about the possibilities this phone will open for them. Phil Chen said that this is not just about blockchain and crypto. The phone is based on the foundation principles of the decentralized web, of which cryptocurrencies are just one part. He argues that the priority of the users should be their data as invasion of privacy is a big concern and the blockchain based Exodus 1s solves that problem.
