There is a lack of female speakers at conferences, objectifying advertisements and half-clothed women at crypto-events. It’s just another episode of the gentlemans club!
So, being a woman it’s comparatively difficult to enter the crypto-world and we won’t blame you if you change your mind. While, the feminist have struggled their way to find more representation for women in the society. The crypto-world didn’t seem to get the memo!
The Great Gender Imbalance
It does not come as a surprise that in the tech business the women are extremely underrepresented. While it may vary from sector to sector. Doesn’t mean its not real. It’s very much happening and no one is doing anything about it. It’s swept under the rug like it always is.
The phenomenon in the crypto-community is far worse. Only 5% of the women are cryptocurrency users. It’s a total brofest. While, the blockchain technology was supposed to be a revolution in the male dominated society, ironically it has produced an even more concentrated macho crypto-community! It’s a total brofest!
Women Don’t Get Cryptocurrency. Really?
Women are often said to be more risk averse and not willing to invest in something as volatile as cryptocurrency. There is also the underrepresentation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical )STEM) subjects throughout the academia. We can’t just turn a blind eye towards this very important fact, which results in fewer female job applicants.
The more misogynistic side of things, women are labelled as incapable of understanding cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology.
Given the prevalent misogynistic behaviour in the society it does not come as a suprise, unfortunately the crypto-world is a direct reflection of it! What is even worse? The gender imbalance in leadership positions in the crypto-world makes it more difficult for the culture to change. So, what do you think could be done about all of this?
How Can Women Be a Part of the Blockchain Industry?
There are few practices we think can help to change the representation of women in the crypto-community.
- Grab the Bull by its horns – Misogynistic behavio
ur should be called and rooted out in the crypto-companies.
- Young girls starting from primary school should be encouraged to opt for STEM subjects.
- Promoting the blockchain in a way that it grabs the attention of young ambitious girls who desire to be a part of the tech-world.
There are blockchain companies that are being advised by women and we do so women at some crypto-conferences. The companies do understand that diversity is necessary got their companies to really thrive.
The truth then? The blockchain technology is not as mainstream as we like to believe it is. There are still a lot of hurdles to cross. We can’t ignore how the blockchain technology is in its infancy stages and is still trying to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to hiring practices.
It’s going to take some time to be a real space for professional well-paid jobs for everyone. Not just the women. This means women have a lot of space to enter, work their way up and leave their mark.
