Blockchain Adoption: UN Deploying Blockchain to Rebuild Afghanistan

With its aims set at rebuilding Afghanistan after years of war that have destroyed the country, United Nations is now planning on using the revolutionary technology of blockchain in the country. In line with its “City for All” initiative, which aims at rebuilding the major cities of Afghanistan, blockchain can help develop an ecosystem for a secure and transparent land record management and affiliated facilities in the war-torn country.

Talking to The Sociable, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said:

The blockchain solution shall serve as a key tool in the delivery of these fundamental components

The United Nations Office of Communication and Information Technologies (UN-OICT) is planning to collaborate with the government of Afghanistan in achieving this goal of transparent record management. UN-Habitat is helping the Afghan government to implement the “City for All” initiative which has common goals, including effective land management, better municipal finance and government, and strategic urban planning.

This aim by the UN also exposes the prospects offered by blockchain technology beyond just the use-case of cryptocurrency. Although bitcoin is the prime use-case of this nascent technology on a global scale, there are a lot of other sectors which can benefit from this tech.

There already are big names like BMW, Walmart, Pepsi and Microsoft experimenting with this tech in many areas, specifically when it comes to supply chain. In order to understand the use-cases beyond just finance, there is a need to understand the framework that blockchain provides to any system.

The biggest feature that blockchain brings to the table is decentralization. With decentralization, the control is taken from a single authority maintaining the network and is delegated to multiple nodes. With multiple nodes doing the task of maintaining the network, the next feature that naturally gets inherited is transparency.

Blockchain is a distributed-ledger technology (DLT) where the record is arranged in blocks. Since the record of all the transactions happening in the network is maintained by every node, the feature of trustlessness is achieved where the trust is not put in a single party, rather it is put in the network itself.

Another factor that makes blockchain stand out is immutability. Once a transaction is put in the record, it cannot be changed. Since blockchain-based systems are purely online, they transcend the boundaries presented by countries and act globally. Decentralization, immutability, transparency, trustlessness and globality, all elements perfect for effective record management.

Land record management is something that requires extreme transparency and security. In a war-stricken country like Afghanistan, rebuilding requires the deployment of cutting-edge technologies in order to provide the most modern solutions. Paper-based solutions are too cumbersome to handle as they aren’t always immune to fraud and manipulation.

With digital blockchain-based immutable and easily accessible records available, the road to rebuilding Afghanistan is expected to be improved by first improving land management. This will also help distinguish areas held by Taliban and those falling under the government’s influence.

Afghanistan use-case only shows that the road for blockchain technology to get employed in various fields will only get smoother in the future. With a more credible image built around both blockchain and bitcoin, it is expected that more and more parties will start employing this tech to improve their own workflows.

Recently, a 28% efficiency increase was also observed by a blockchain-based trial done by Pepsi in its supply-chain. All of these developments only signify a more inclusive future for blockchain technology in the public and private areas.
