BitDSM, StartupEmbassy Launch Hacker House for Devcon Bangkok

As Devcon 2024, Ethereum’s premier developer conference, approaches Bangkok this November, a new wave of collaborative innovation spaces is emerging to foster the next generation of blockchain development. These temporary hacker houses, popping up around major crypto events, are becoming crucial catalysts for innovation in the Ethereum ecosystem.
The latest addition to this trend is a collaborative effort between BitDSM and StartupEmbassy, who are organizing a week-long hacker house in Bangkok from November 11-18. The space will host 30 developers during the Devcon week, creating an environment where spontaneous collaboration and round-the-clock innovation can thrive.

The significance of these spaces traces back to Ethereum’s early days, where informal gatherings of developers led to some of the ecosystem’s most important innovations. The tradition continues today, with projects like BitDSM itself being born out of ETHSingapore, highlighting how these collaborative environments can spark new ventures.
Unlike structured hackathons or formal conferences, hacker houses provide an organic environment for innovation. The informal setting encourages continuous interaction between developers, leading to spontaneous brainstorming sessions and collaborative problem-solving. This model has proven particularly effective in the Ethereum community, where complex technical challenges often require diverse perspectives and cross-disciplinary approaches.
StartupEmbassy, which began as a pioneering hacker house in Silicon Valley during 2016-2017, brings its rich heritage of fostering open innovation to Bangkok. During its Silicon Valley days, the space became known for cultivating an environment where developers could freely exchange ideas and build groundbreaking projects. “We’re bringing that same Silicon Valley spirit of collaborative innovation to the Ethereum community,” notes StartupEmbassy’s founder Carlos de la Lama-Noriega Pfrimmer.

BitDSM, which emerged as a hacker project from ETHGlobal Singapore, brings innovative Bitcoin-to-Ethereum bridging technology to the ecosystem. The project introduces BitcoinPods, a secure mechanism for non-custodial native bitcoin delegation that enables financial applications on Ethereum.
“The value of coliving spaces during major events like Devcon cannot be overstated,” explains Sarah Chen, a blockchain researcher. “These environments often lead to collaborations that continue long after the event ends, creating lasting impact in the ecosystem.”
As the blockchain industry continues to evolve, these collaborative spaces may play an increasingly important role in fostering innovation and community building. They represent a unique blend of Silicon Valley’s hacker culture with the decentralized ethos of the blockchain world, creating environments where the next generation of Web3 solutions can emerge.
