Civic is one of the blockchain-based platforms currently floating around on CoinMarketCap. But among 2000+ others, how is it any different? In order to get an insight into the project, BlockPublisher got in touch with the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of the platform, Vinny Lingham. Civic essentially aims at protecting the digital identities of the people using the revolutionary technology of blockchain.
The following Q&A with Vinny gives one a clear insight into what this project is all about.
- What is Civic’s Long-Term Vision?
Vinny: At Civic, we imagine a world where everyone has a digital identity that they control and protect. This vision requires reimagining the way that we currently prove and verify identity. Imagine a digital identity that is securely stored locally on your mobile device that is accepted everywhere you go, from the airport to the bank to the bar and everywhere in between.
- What consensus algorithm is used at its core and why?
Vinny: Civic’s identity verification solutions currently leverage Bitcoin-based chains and the Ethereum chain, but the Civic platform and Identity.com are built to be completely interoperable across chains that meet our privacy and smart contract requirements.
- What products are present in the Civic ecosystem?
Vinny: The Civic Secure ID Platform (SIP) offers Civic partners a variety of live identity verification solutions.
Civic Age Verification allows for companies to anonymously verify a user’s age without providing extraneous information. For example, Civic partnered with Anheuser-Busch InBev to create the world’s first crypto beer vending machine. By scanning a Civic QR code, the vending machine is able to determine whether a user is over 21 without sharing extra information like address, age, or date of birth.
Civic Login enables users to create an account and login into any app or website without needing a username or password. This product offers both identified and anonymous login, depending on partner needs.
Civic Know Your Customer enables customers to go through due diligence identity verification, typically mandated by financial institutions or governments, without the need to overshare any sensitive, personal information. Civic Know Your Customer leverages the power of the reusable decentralized verified ID stored on the user’s mobile device and secured with blockchain technology. Partners can quickly and securely verify users from all over the world in order to meet their compliance needs.
Additionally, Civic provides Accredited Investor Checks and Watchlist Checks via our partner network. Visit civic.com for more details.

- What is the project’s main focus right now?
Vinny: Civic is focused on creating the best possible user experience for identity verification through the Civic App. We know the world of blockchain digital identity is new and can be intimidating, so we want to create an experience that makes blockchain-based identity verification convenient and user-friendly for both businesses and individuals.
In addition, Civic is spearheading the development of Identity.com. Identity.com is a decentralized, open source identity ecosystem, where anyone who needs to verify identity and anyone who needs to validate identity can transact for identity verification services. This makes identity verification services, like background checks or KYC, more accessible, cost-effective, and most importantly, more secure with blockchain-based identity verification technology.
- Is the team local or global?
Vinny: Civic is a global, decentralized team, currently based across the U.S., Brazil, Germany, and South Africa.
- What is the target audience of the platform?
Vinny: In a world where our personal information is increasingly valuable and vulnerable, Civic identity verification helps people regain control over their personal information. The Civic platform for any businesses, government, or user who understand the importance of consumer protection and data privacy.
In addition, Identity.com is a creating a global identity ecosystem, where anyone who needs to verify a user’s information and anyone who needs to validate a user’s information can seamlessly and securely transact for identity verification services.
The theft of the personal and sensitive information of the people is one of the major issues prevalent in the digital world right now. The possibilities that blockchain provides can surely revamp this arena for good and can provide people with a secure infrastructure and a guarantee that their sensitive information is in safe hands. Civic is one project to look out for in this aspect as we move forward in time with the market getting more and more saturated.
