From CDs to Blockchain; We Have Come a Long Way Together

When was the last time you held a CD in your hand or rolled up tape of a cassette through a pen? If you’re a kid of the 90s, then you’d know the excitement. You’d know what it was like. The excitement and the wait. The frustration and the pain. We knew it all.

But ever since technology came out, it all changed. From cassettes we went to CDs and then to crappy internet speeds and Limewire to Spotify. While we miss the feeling of holding onto a CD, we have to admit that all the Indie bands you’re so fond of now wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for technology which made music distribution so easy. Musicians now get discovered more easily, create more music and have more agency.

But with all this musicians have been hurt and helped at the same time.

Singers like Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes etc are part of the amateur artist wave that made their way up through YouTube and other social media platforms such as these. The plethora of apps that can not only help you to record your voice but all create music for it without the use of instruments. You don’t have to depend on fancy instruments, experience composers or record companies to break in the market.

New and Improved Radio Channels

The radio channels that now exist aren’t on radio’s anymore. The word radio has taken a new form where now they are more personalized and tailored just for you. Depending on the kind of music you listen to, the apps generate a playlist on their own for the kind of music you’d like to listen to.

Users are more eager to listen to music due to this because you don’t have to look through long lists of music to get to your taste. There is a sense of engagement and agency to what you’re listening to.

Not to forget, these services can help artists reach their target audience. Overall the whole system is a musicians and audience friendly!

Show me the money

Music industry is a bit stingy when it comes to money. Individual artists don’t get paid much. With these apps, like Spotify, Youtube etc, stakeholders and royalties need to be paid so in the end artists receive very little.

But with technology like blockchain, this can be reversed. Blockchain eliminates the middleman but using smart contracts. Smart contracts bridge the gap between the musicians and the audience.

There is also increased transparency which means that there is more accountability and the funds and royalties can be tracked so no one gets more than they are supposed to.

We need to treat our musicians SMART-ly

Artists are paid as less as one cent per play on apps like Spotify and Youtube. Some companies take years to pay but if they could integrate smart contracts in their system, they could pay their artists in real time.

If record labels aren’t making their artists happy, they won’t last in the business for long. And people now have other options as well so distribution companies should really watch out.

Change is inevitable as they say it; and we know entertainment industries has change a lot rapidly due to technology. We don’t know how blockchain will shape the future but we are most certain it will!

  1. There is a bit more to this story than just put up a website/blockchain and it will solve all of the issues that ill’s the musicbiz. We’ve been there way back in 1994 we said the same thing about the WWW. And, guess what it’s actually worse today for Indie artists than it was before as the mergers of entertainment distribution accelerate and services like SoundCloud and Spotify directly getting into distribution.

    Why are they doing this…. it’s easy Distribution is Everything and one single website or blockchain is not going to began to make a dent in a business that so few people even understand. Here’s a test, ask the other person if self-distribution is the same as putting it into a network of thousands of potential channels. It’s just math and to get a release into proper distribution there are things like the ISRC and UPC codes that most #IndieLabels let alone Artists, Bands and Groups doing themselves. some of which they can’t based upon the framework of how the Uniform Product Council now deals with UPS vs firms like ours that are grandfathered into issuance of them.

    Seriously replace WWW with Blockchain and it’s the 90s all over again.

    PS we do believe that publishing all the Data of Music onto an Entertainment Public Blockchain since all of the data that music be issues is the same as per DDEX, NARM425 and VDSA specifications; And, with pair-keys to id end use and reproduction rights that they can be assigned, however it won’t be anyone specifical blockchain or we’re doing all wrong.
